Agribusiness plays a key role in the Brazilian economy, stimulating Brazil’s production and helping reduce the external vulnerability of the Brazilian economy, as the main generator of trade balances. In order to assist the agribusiness industry, the BNDES offers financing to cattle-raising, planting or the restructuring of grazing lands, management practices and expenses until the first harvest, among other projects.
Besides agribusiness, the BNDES also provides support to small-scale agriculture through the PRONAF (a program intended to strengthen small-scale agriculture).
The BNDES structures its support for farming activities based on strict environmental criteria. As it is strongly committed to the environment, the BNDES adopts stringent criteria when choosing the projects to be supported. For instance, projects depending on wood as their main raw material will only be financed if this wood derives from planted forests. The environmental criteria are decisive in granting financing.
Together with other governmental bodies, the BNDES also develops financing programs specifically intended to support farming activities. An example of this is MODERFROTA, which finances the purchase of agricultural tractors and related apparatus, harvesting machines and equipment, as well as coffee preparation, drying and processing machines.
