» BNDES Card expands support to
investments in design
The BNDES will finance product design services to
foster private investments in innovation. As of now,
companies and individual businesspeople, as well as design
service providers willing to offer product and packaging
design services, including ergonomics and modeling, can
apply for accreditation as suppliers on the BNDES Card
Website.
Considering the multiple applications and the usefulness
of this activity, the BNDES Card will foster investments
from micro, small and medium-sized companies in design,
contributing to adding value to Brazilian production,
while gaining a competitive edge among foreign competitors,
especially Asian countries.
Product and packaging design offices intending to apply
for accreditation should access the website
www.cartaobndes.gov.br, click on the menu “Be an
accredited supplier” and fill in an online form.
The use of the BNDES Card to finance innovation efforts
began in June 2009, when research, development and
innovation services, including design, started to be
contracted. At that time, its use was limited to research
applied to the development of products and processes,
contracted with accredited Scientific and Technological
Institutions (STIs). As of now, this possibility has been
expanded to design companies and service providers.
Among other governmental lines and programs focusing on
support to innovation, the BNDES Card is distinguished due
to easy access and use. Besides this, it does not require
any previously developed projects. So far, 74 institutions
have been accredited to offer technological services,
which also include compliance assessment services.
The BNDES Card is a pre-approved revolving credit facility
with a limit of up to R$ 1 million per issuing bank
(Bradesco, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal,
Nossa Caixa and Banrisul), with fixed installments, a term
of loan of up to 48 months, besides an attractive interest
rate (0.99% per month in February 2010). It can be used by
Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Businesses to acquire items
registered on the BNDES Card Website.
Over 125,000 items are available and, currently, the most
sold items are machinery and equipment, computers,
software applications, commercial furniture, utility
vehicles and motorcycles for delivery services.
Since its creation in 2003, more than 250,000 BNDES Cards
have been issued, amounting to R$ 9.4 billion in
pre-approved credit limits for investment. In 2009, the
BNDES Card account for over 185,000 transactions,
representing R$ 2.7 million in businesses, a growth of
200% compared to the previous year.
