» BNDES sponsors Rio Folle Journée and will stage a "choro" concert

On June 1, at 5:30 p.m., the BNDES auditorium will be the stage of a concert by the Maurício Carrilho Sextet, as part of the Rio Folle Journée musical marathon, a festival sponsored by BNDES and that will take place in the city from June 1 to June 3.

Folle Journée was born in 1995 in Nantes, France, the brainchild of musician and cultural producer René Martin. It has already been held in Lisbon, Bilbao and Tokyo, and now, for the first time, its stage is Rio de Janeiro. The intention of the Rio festival is the same as that of the Nantes Folles Journées: to present a varied program of high-quality musical events at accessible prices.

In Rio, 40 concerts will take place on June 1, 2 and 3, in concert halls such as Theatro Municipal and Sala Cecília Meireles, with tickets ranging from BRL 1.00 to BRL 5.00 and showcasing artists such as pianist Nelson Freire and cellist Alexander Kniazev. The idea is to have the event included in the city's cultural calendar.
In the theme chosen for 2007, "Harmonia dos Povos - As Escolas Nacionais" [The Harmony of the People - The National Schools], the Brazilian school of classical music was the only non-European school included in the program. Renowned Brazilian performers, as Nelson Freire and Antonio Meneses, were also invited.

The proposal is to explore the inspirational roots of all classical music: the popular music of each nation. In the particular case of Brazil, to explore one of our major building blocks: the choro 1

The sextet, formed by the musicians Pedro Paes (clarinet), Naomi Kumamoto (flute), Rui Alvim (clarone 2), Maurício Carrilho (guitar), Luciana Rabello (cavaquinho 3) and Marcus Thadeu (pandeiro 4), will perform choro classics. The concert will be open to the public, with free admission. Ticket distribution will start at 4:30 p.m. at the entrance of Auditório Arino Ramos, on the ground floor of the BNDES Building.

(1) N.T. "choro" = traditionally called 'chorinho' [little weeping] is a Brazilian popular music style.
(2) N.T. "clarone (Italian)" = low-pitched clarinet, low in B flat or high in E flat.
(3) N.T. "cavaquinho" = small stringed instrument of the European guitar family.
(4) N.T. "pandeiro" = xxx a type of hand frame drum. There are two important distinctions between a pandeiro and the common tambourine. The tension of the head on the pandeiro can be tuned, allowing the player a choice of high and low notes. Also, the metal jingles (called platinelas in Portuguese) are crisper, drier and less sustained on pandeiros than on the tambourine. This provides clarity when swift, complex rhythms are played.
