Igreja de Santa Efigência (Saint Iphigenia Church)
Ouro Preto (MG)
Museu de Arte Sacra do Carmo (Sacred Art Museum of
Mount Carmel) - Masc - Paróquia Nossa Senhora do

The church
was considered the main temple of the lay
brotherhood of black people and was built where the
primitive mud chapel was, paying homage to Saint
Iphigenia. To get there we need to go up a steep
slope and 42 steps of a ladder sculptured in stone,
presenting several elements of the Agrican culture,
such as cowries shells, goat and lamb horns, marks
of rites of initiation, embedded on its baroque
carvings. As legend says, it was constructed by the
slave Chico Rei from 1722 to 1785.
The church features old images, some of which
representing black saints – such as Saint Iphigenia
and Saint Benedictus – and the primitive image of
Our Lady of the Rosary. The building has a religious
order cemetery, built in the 19th century.
